A Foot in History and a Gaze Toward the Future!
Our History
Stockholms Reparationsvarv AB has a long and fascinating history that spans several centuries. The shipyard is located on Beckholmen, an island in Stockholm’s inner archipelago, which is one of Sweden’s oldest continuously active industrial areas, with roots dating back to the 17th century.
The 1600s: Beckholmen’s Early Years
Beckholmen has been a central hub for maritime activities since the 17th century. Originally, the island was used for the production of pitch and tar, materials essential for waterproofing wooden ships. This activity gave the island its name – “Beckholmen” (Pitch Island).
The 1800s: The Beginnings of Shipyard Operations
In the mid-1800s, Beckholmen was transformed into a repair shipyard. In 1848, construction began on two dry docks, which are still in use today for ship repairs. These docks were among the first of their kind in Sweden and laid the foundation for Beckholmen’s development as a leading shipyard for maintenance and repair.
During this period, Beckholmen became a bustling workplace, servicing everything from small coastal vessels to large steamships. The shipyard played a vital role in supporting Sweden’s maritime trade and industrial growth, particularly given Stockholm’s central role as a seafaring city.
The 1900s: Modernization and Development
Throughout the 20th century, Stockholms Reparationsvarv underwent numerous changes and modernizations to meet the growing demand for ship repairs. In the 1920s, a third dry dock was constructed, further increasing the shipyard’s capacity. During World War II, the shipyard played an important role in repairing and maintaining ships for both the Swedish Navy and civilian maritime transport.
After the war, the shipyard continued to evolve and modernize to meet new technological requirements. The docks and workshops were upgraded to handle a new generation of ships, including steel-hulled and motorized vessels.
The 2000s: A Living Heritage and Modern Shipyard Operations
Today, Stockholms Reparationsvarv AB is a modern shipyard still located on Beckholmen, a site that is now part of the Royal National City Park. The shipyard offers a wide range of services in ship repair and maintenance, from minor repairs to extensive overhauls.
Despite the technological advancements and changes over the years, Stockholms Reparationsvarv has retained its strong connection to history and maritime culture. Beckholmen remains an important part of Stockholm’s maritime landscape and continues to be a place where tradition and innovation meet. Currently, work is underway on a new detailed development plan for Beckholmen, aiming to ensure and strengthen the ongoing development of the island and its maritime activities.
